BLDC Motor with Encoder

SLW Motor builds the BLDC motor with encoder as one assembly — a brushless DC motor with an integrated encoder for closed-loop speed and position feedback — the step up from Hall-only commutation when a robotic joint, automation axis, or medical instrument needs to know exactly where the shaft is, not just which direction it's turning. Send your torque, speed, and encoder requirements to get a quote before finalizing a spec.

Feedback Matters

Why an Encoder, Not Just Hall Sensors

What Hall Sensors Do

A bldc motor with encoder adds what Hall sensors alone cannot: a Hall sensor tells a controller roughly where the rotor sits — enough to commutate the motor, not enough to hold a set point. An encoder adds position and speed resolution on top of that, so the controller can close the loop and hold a position. Where holding torque without continuous feedback is enough, a stepper gear motor is the simpler, lower-cost option — see the stepper gear motor vs BLDC motor with encoder comparison.

What the Encoder Adds

  • Hold a position: the controller can keep the shaft at a set point
  • Ramp speed smoothly: speed changes follow a controlled profile
  • Report actual position: shaft position goes back to the system

Specifications & Configuration Options

Frame sizes run from a 12 mm coreless BLDC through 16, 22, 28, 36, 42 and 60 mm brushless DC motor frames, at 3–48 V matched to your target.

  • Frame & Voltage

    Coreless BLDC from 12 mm through 16, 22, 28, 36, 42 and 60 mm frames, at 3–48 V.

  • Gearbox Choice

Bare motor or paired with a gearbox stage, so the encoder reads the motor shaft.

  • Encoder Type

Magnetic or optical, incremental (A/B/Z) or absolute; magnetic encoders resist dust and vibration better.

  • Resolution & Pinout

Resolution and connector pinout are specified to your control loop and confirmed on the drawing, not fixed to a catalog number.

  • Housing & Gear Material

Housing and gear material options include brass, stainless steel, powder-metallurgy alloys, or engineering plastics.

  • Value-Added Integration

Encoder wiring, PCB soldering, and wire harness assembly are all done in-house as value-added integration.

Tell us your torque/speed target, voltage, frame size, and encoder type, and we will match the motor and gearbox configuration to your application.

Model Example

The 12mm brushless coreless motor with planetary gearbox and encoder pairs a coreless BLDC stage with an integrated encoder and planetary gearhead in one compact assembly, built with the gear ratio, connector type, and wire harness you specify. Where a brushed platform is acceptable, the 12mm N20 brushed gear motor with encoder and the 10mm coreless planetary gear motor with encoder offer the same feedback at lower cost.

  • Model BCGM1223001: 118 rpm rated speed at 12V
  • Rated Torque: 0.8 kg·cm rated torque
  • Stall Torque: 2.5 kg·cm stall torque
  • PCB Soldering: Encoder interfaces directly with your control board
  • Larger Frames: 16mm and 22mm brushless coreless planetary gear motors
Applications

BLDC Motor with Encoder Applications

Robotics

For robotics and automation applications, the encoder delivers closed-loop feedback that keeps robotic arm joints and gripper positioning controlled and repeatable.

Encoders give the drive the feedback it needs to hold position at each joint and gripper.

FAQ

FAQ

Encoders are not standard on brushless motors; they are added when an application needs closed-loop position or speed feedback.

Do brushless motors have encoders?
Not by default — encoders are added when the application needs closed-loop position or speed feedback beyond basic Hall-sensor commutation. SLW's encoder-equipped BLDC line integrates the encoder directly into the motor housing.
What is the disadvantage of a BLDC motor?
BLDC motors need an external controller for commutation, and adding an encoder brings extra wiring and cost versus a brushed motor — trade-offs offset by longer life and lower maintenance.
Which motors have encoders?
Encoders can be added to brushed DC, BLDC, and stepper gear motors; the right choice depends on required resolution, speed range, and closed-loop control. Encoder motors: incremental vs absolute vs Hall feedback explains how the three feedback types differ.
